Varoš

Varoš is a typical suburb of all Mediterranean medieval towns. This way. as a rule, they are very close to the town fortresses but they also contain facilities necessary for essential life functioning, which are inappropriate for the town core. Many a time they are right next to the main town entrance, as the case is in Rab. Residential buildings with people who work in those services are erected here creating picturesque agglomerates, which resemble the rural ambiances more than the urban.

On this western side of the town, the walls were the strongest with two rectangular towers protecting the main entrance. The upper gate was located between the Tower Kula smjelih (Tower the Courageous) and the Tower Kula sv. Kristofora (Tower of St. Christophor) on the top. This one is still preserved, the inner medieval and the outer one dating from the end of the 15th century as a result of restoration, additional building and strengthening of the named bastions. In the southern part of Varoš, under the town walls, there were three cisterns with well crowns dating from the 15th century. Right next to the sea and the ship way there was a building complex of arsenal for the construction and repair of different vessels. There was probably a slaughterhouse, as it was the case with many inshore towns, as well as the town cemetery according to the painting dating from the 17th century. In the broader area of Varoš there was also the centre of a certain monastic community, which took care of the feeble and the ill.

With the first sign of tourist activity most of the named buildings were removed and hotels were built along with other facilities adequate for this type of activity. At that time it was planned to plant, reaching today's graveyard, the vegetation for the new and magnificent town park of today. It was the merit of the head forester Pravdoje Belia.

Until recently there were a true coastal market place and a fish market, which were moved for no real reason from there to the new quasi town. The last restoration of the square with the fountain was an excessively over designed attempt at modern urbanism that was out of the ambiance context of the town and its historical suburb.
